January 27: Bad Anime Night Boring Anime Night Anime Night

Hi, guys! Are the strike-outs getting old yet? No? Alright, awesome.

Lol, anime.

At last night’s showing we watched Psychic Detective Yakumo, Katanagatari, and Bakuman, all three of which made for a night which I have heard other people dubbing ‘Boring Anime Night’. While part of me tentatively agrees, I also think that it wasn’t such a bad night. Here are my thoughts; you know where to put your questions and concerns.

Cool story bro.

First up was Psychic Detective Yakumo, a show I think I would be well within my rights to call “horrible”. I would say that this is the first truly bad show that we’ve seen this semester. It pretty much insults the viewer’s intelligence at every turn. The plot is always either contrived or uninteresting, the main character is a dick (and not even an endearing one, for the most part), and the female lead is kind of an idiot. The detective guy also reminds me a bit too much of Gumshoe from Phoenix Wright. Except that I like Gumshoe.

Well, okay. I guess it has ONE redeeming quality.

What I think actually annoyed me most about the show was that each case was only an episode long. I can see how this might work–I remember watching Detective Conan and thinking the mysteries were brilliant–but the mysteries in Yakumo aren’t mysterious at all. Yakumo basically cheats his way into solving every case (and the very first one was stupidly easy; Yakumo magically finds a bunch of buried shit, and then picks up the suspects cup, and that’s all it took to close the case?), which does not make for an interesting show. If the mystery isn’t difficult to solve, it’s not worth paying attention to.

Unfortunately, every mystery in Psychic Detective Yakumo is opened and then closed immediately. I get the idea of wanting a show that is episodic in nature, but it just makes the cases so short that there’s no reason to keep watching. Once Yakumo fingers the culprit, it might as well be over.

Our leads.

Our second show, Talking: The Anime Katanagatari, I would probably say was the best show last night. It does seem very shounen in its way, but it seems to be kind of aware of that, so it isn’t too hard of a watch. The show isn’t too serious; a lot of what happens is shown in a pretty lighthearted fashion. Not to mention the artwork is unique and the animation is generally beautiful. I thought this was a very good-looking show, and the sense of style it had gave it something that I think a more standard animation direction would have ruined.

I can safely say this is a show I will be finishing. Each episode is fifty minutes, yes, but with only twelve of them, I figure it can’t be too bad unless it gets very boring very fast. I know some people were put off by this during the showing, and I agree that the talking is excessive, but I didn’t really mind most of the character interaction. This was another very shounen thing about it, actually–stopping to talk in the middle of a fight isn’t exactly a rare phenomenon in those sorts–but in many places it seemed to be sort of making fun of itself, and I like that.

That said, I can see how it wouldn’t be for everyone. The speech is lengthy, the action is usually short, and the story is… well, I don’t know, I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

Too right.

The third show, Bakuman, was better than I had been expecting. I’d been hearing so much about how it was boring or just plain bad, but I think I was pleasantly surprised. It doesn’t look like I’ll watch the rest, but I don’t think it’s a bad show.

In fact, it was frequently funny, which I think for the most part saves it from being boring. The premise is also interesting, but I don’t know if it’s something I can bring myself to watch for a whole season. I can’t think of many exciting ways the protagonist can draw manga before I get kind of bored. There’s little else to say about the show, though. It’s not exactly deep, but it’s not a complete farce, either. It’s hard for me to decide what to make of it, but I only see the humor and interest lasting so long. If somebody can convince me it gets exciting later on, please go ahead.

…And that’s all I have to say about that. See you guys next week!

Perhaps a better name would be “Slow Anime Night,” since the shows were on the whole not entirely terrible (as you point out), despite being outpaced by molasses.

I didn’t pay much attention to Yakumo (I lost Gene’s no-laptop challenge before the showing even started), so all I can comment on is that it had some sort of weird shading/outline effect that was mildly jarring and that the little girl was at once both DERP-inducing and rather adorable. Perhaps it was a horrible show. Making me bored enough to pull out my laptop before the first eyecatch is probably a bad sign.

I liked Katanagatari before, still like it now. Wearing my best trollface while listening to everyone bemoan the nigh-DBZ levels of talk-talk-talk-talk-short fight was a very enjoyable way to rewatch the first two episodes. It picks up later, but the amount of talking never really decreases (how else do you fill 40 minutes of animation?), so it’s good that you can tolerate it lest you rip your hair out in frustration in later episodes.

Bakuman — eh. I can see the appeal of the plot and the humor being put out, but something just didn’t click for me. The hair on that girl’s mom, though; sheesh. O.o

Looking forward to seeing everyone shit bricks when we show Madoka next meeting (or whenever if plans change or I misunderstood). [Kyubey] Hey, CSM anime club, don’t you want to be trolled by SHAFT? [/Kyubey]

I love DERPgirl, but yeah, definitely not enough to keep me watching a show or anything.. If half the show was her mute smile and awkward head tilts, then maybe.

I think I liked Katanagatari, too. Only three episodes were on the drive I inspected, so I’ll have to grab the remaining nine myself, but I really like the art style and I find the characters pretty charming. The fact that the original author of the light novels also wrote Bakemonogatari also tickles me (and makes sense, I guess, considering the titles). I’m hoping it’ll be enough for me to forgive the rather formulaic shounen set-up it has.

Adjusted the schedule, warned Daniel, and called the cops. We’re showing Madoka next week. Hey guys, won’t you watch anime with me next week?

Yakumo isn’t very good. Katanagatari shouldn’t even be fitted with the likes of it. I agree with the sentiment, PDY is the first bad show we’ve shown this semester, and really it only stayed on the list because Matt Armijo called it “Psychic Detective Bakuman” when we were making the list a while back. He also said we were reaching into abscesses as opposed to recesses looking for anime to show this semester. That still makes me chuckle, even though he’s right!

I think I made it pretty clear during the showing, Bakuman pales compared to the comic book (hurrrrr). Then again, we’re an anime club, we show anime. Japanese culture plays a major role, sure, but manga is outside our scope. As an animated medium, I felt like Bakuman slowed down and never kept momentum through the series, so I guess that’s just the “feels bad man” aspect of watching the show.

On a related note, that really makes the whole idea of an “anime convention” a bit of a misnomer, don’t you think? I mean, anime’s usually a pretty big part of it, but most of the time it seems like people just go to those because its like a small Japan. A small Japan filled with otakus instead of working fathers that drink all the time.

I feel like I’m the only guy around who hasn’t seen Madoka yet. I keep hearing about how startling the third episode is, so I hope I’m not building it up too much in my mind as to be disappointed.

I might actually check out the Bakuman manga if it really is that much better. I’ve been reluctant about reading manga lately, though–I hate reading it on a computer screen, yet I don’t want to pay $11 for a book I can finish in ten minutes. I guess we’ll see.

And I guess that’s true about the anime convention… like a little Japan with less Asians and probably more pasty white cosplayers like me.

Yakumo was legitimately bad. It was boring, cliche, and lacked direction and thought. That’s all I have to say about it.

Katanagatari had a very cool animation style, and a looooooot of talking. The characters are pretty interesting (even if the plot is rather unoriginal). I just wish they’d either talk less, or talk about more interesting things. I’m usually okay with excessive amounts of talking (I did like Tatami Galaxy and Bakemonogatari), but this was even getting to me at points.

Bakuman, also, wasn’t too bad. I don’t know I’d be enthralled with a show about aspiring mangaka, but it could have been much worse. I’ll just take Gene’s word for it that the source material is superior, never really check it out, and call it good.

MADOKA NEXT WEEK

/agree and stuff

Can’t wait to see the brickshitting everyone’s talking about next week…

On an unrelated note, I blame you and Gene for getting me addicted to Kumikyoku. I usually don’t listen to a single song repeatedly like this, but jeez. I guess I’m… slightly justified in that it’s not just one song.

You know it’s not the only Kumikyoku, right?
