August 24: A new year, and also anime

Grant Walker · August 26, 2011

Hey, everyone! It’s time for another semester at the happiest place on earth, the Colorado School of Mines. For the new Freshman types that don’t know me, I’m Grant Walker, a Sophomore in Computer Science. I’m also not too bright, but you’ll figure that out as we go. Anyway, since last year, I’ve typically been posting my opinion on the anime we see each night, because everyone cares about my opinion.

It also gives you the chance to express your own thoughts in the convenient comment field below. Please feel free to do so.

Anyway, for this showing we watched Nichijou, and those who stayed for a while after also got a peek at Carnival Phantasm, which I’m not going to talk about because I believe Gene said he wanted to show it later, too. But anyway…

Nichijou

There are no men in this show.

So Nichijou was a pretty basic show. It was a slice-of-life kind of anime taking place in a world that’s only a wee bit different from ours, where eight-year-old prodigies can develop fully sentient and rather-human robuts.

It’s hard for me to think of what to say about this show. It is a slice of life, after all, which often don’t have much you can say about them in the first place. At least the animation was pretty good, but since it’s KyoAni they don’t get any points for it.

The first episode was kind of funny (I particularly enjoyed the entire wiener skit) but past the first episode most of the comedy seemed kind of inane. I feel like this show would be better if you just watched it the way it was released–maybe one episode a week, tops. There’s just too much nonsense and, once you grow accustomed to it, a lot of the jokes stop being as funny, so I feel like smaller doses would be a better way to take this show.

Anyway, it looks like this is going to be one of the shorter posts I have… which makes sense, since there was only one show.

At any rate, here’s to a good rest of the year with you guys! I’m looking forward to my weekly reprieves from girlfriends and schoolwork.

See you next week!

There are definitely no men in that picture, alright.

Maybe I should introduce myself too, real fast? I’m Chris Lee, a junior in Mechanical Engineering. Some of you may recognize me as one of the Physics I TA’s. Mind you, I have zero professionalism during Anime Club meetings. I probably don’t need to describe myself further – if you stick around after meetings, you’ll learn plenty more about me than you ever wanted to know.

Nichijou was a show I was originally planning to watch as it aired, but…I don’t know. As I noted in a previous post, it didn’t really click with me. Some parts were genuinely funny, but many others just left me blinking and staring. I think it’s partially because unlike Lucky Star or AzuDaioh (which I enjoyed), the humor focuses less on the cast and more on their interaction with their surroundings. The jokes center on the cast’s ability to calmly accept completely outrageous happenings around them (and the title plays on that idea). So I guess I just don’t have the requisite sense of humor. I know most people enjoy this show, so I can hardly call it bad.

Looking forward to whatever junk Gene shows next week.

This week: Junk.

Next week: More junk.

I love how that works. The week after that is a surprise. Here’s a hint: It’s junk.

But seriously, I love Nichijou. I just wish it didn’t wear out it’s welcome.

I’ve watched half of Nichijou, and I’m not really planning on finishing it. IMO the only good episodes are the first three, and really only because of the rock-paper-scissors and jumprope sketches (which stop after the first three episodes). The button sketch was pretty good as well, but really there’s not much to this show.

If I remember correctly, next week will be alright, maybe I’ll do a preview or some shit.

The skits were fun, the rest was bland. I got bored and played with transistors instead. I don’t enjoy SoL anime in general, though, so no surprise there. I look forward to the rest of the semester’s showings.
